Object name McMurdo Station
Caption By far the largest of the Antarctic research bases, McMurdo Station may have as many as 1,200 personnel at the height of summer. The base consists of dormitories, administration blocks, workshops, warehouses, laboratories, a Chapel, a fire station, a coffee shop, a gymnasium, and a greenhouse, totaling around 85 buildings. The sea ice in this photo will start to melt by the end of summer, so the airfield shown here will be dismantled and moved. There are two other airfields, both built on permanent ice, but they are farther away. Personnel are generally flown in from Christchurch, New Zealand, and supplies are brought in on cargo vessels escorted by icebreakers. All rubbish is sorted, accumulated and taken back to the United States by ship.
